WMU was represented by Professor Jens-Uwe Schröder-Hinrichs, Vice-President (Academic Affairs), who addressed the topic of “International Maritime Governance, Best Practices and Legal Framework.” Further presentations included an in-depth analysis of Lebanon’s national maritime regime, infrastructure and operation presented by Dr Manal Nader, Director of the Institute of the Environment at the University of Balamand in Lebanon, and an empirical and evidence-based presentation on maritime governance and cooperation in the context of the Beirut Port made by Ms Jihane Abi Khalil, Managing Director of Adelmar Logistics Sarl and a lecturer on logistics at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik in Lebanon. ![]() Implemented by ICMPD, the project includes a focus on technical assistance to Lebanon in the development and advocacy of a National Integrated Maritime Policy. The online event was part of the EU-funded project “Strengthening Capability for Integrated Border Management in Lebanon (IBM III),” which focuses on enhancing Lebanon’s border governance and reinforcing a rights-based approach to border management, while contributing to the security and stability of border communities in Lebanon. In this study, we analyze the extent of sea ice changes and the maritime traffic in the high north and also evaluate maritime safety in the frame of the application of the Polar Code boundaries in the Arctic.On 27 May, the World Maritime University (WMU) contributed to the delivery of a high-profile webinar titled “Maritime Lebanon,” organized by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD). However, the boundaries of the Polar Code are not compatible with any of them. The marine boundaries of the Arctic region have been defined differently by the Arctic Council Working Groups based on physical, geographical, and ecological characteristics. While maritime activities are increasing in the Arctic, little attention is being paid to some of the northernmost regions that are greatly influenced by the Arctic climate and are excluded from the Polar Code. It is essential to understand the challenges pertaining to polar circumstances and reasons for maritime casualties in order to mitigate future risks. It aims at mitigating the risks of harsh environments and weather conditions for safe operations and the prevention and control of maritime pollution from ships in the polar regions. The improvement of the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (Polar Code) has been a long process and is based on the previous International Maritime Organization (IMO) instruments.
